My High School Procrastination Story

Back in high school in Germany, about 30 years ago, I was the king of procrastination. Every night before a big test, I would finally sit down to study, feeling an overwhelming sense of stress and panic. I would open my books, my heart racing, knowing I had wasted the days before doing everything but studying. I told myself, “I’ll start tomorrow,” again and again—until suddenly, there was no tomorrow left.

The days leading up to the test were filled with guilt. I knew I should be studying, but somehow, I convinced myself that watching TV, hanging out with friends, or even cleaning my room was more important. Anything seemed better than facing the reality of what I had to do.

When I finally forced myself to study at the last minute, I felt completely overwhelmed. I tried to cram everything into a few short hours, flipping through pages frantically, hoping my brain would somehow absorb all the information overnight. But the stress made it hard to focus, and the pressure kept me awake, tossing and turning, regretting my choices.

The next morning, I would go into the test exhausted, my mind foggy, and my confidence shattered. Sometimes, I got lucky and managed to scrape by, but other times, I knew I could have done so much better—if only I had started earlier.

This cycle of procrastination followed me through school, causing unnecessary stress and self-doubt. Looking back, I wish I had known the strategies I now teach others. I wish I had understood how to break the cycle, how to create better study habits, and how to manage my time effectively.
