Wigge: Most corporations and associations that book me as a motivational speaker seem to have five significant needs they want to be fulfilled by a speaker:

1. They want their staff to leave the keynote session refreshed and motivated to strive for certain company goals (for example, better sales, advanced change management, or stronger leadership).
2. They want their staff to have a memorable experience that leaves a lasting impression. Something they still talk about weeks later.
3. They prefer all conference participants to be highly entertained in between learning sessions.
4. They want their staff or clients to learn simple strategies to develop their leadership, sales, self-motivation, or change management skills.
5. They want their target audience to get an out-of-the-box perspective through the incredible experiences of a business motivational speaker.

Wigge: Well, professional keynote speaking is far more than just one hour on stage. Preparation, intense client contact, speaking, and post-conference support are what is required for a motivational business speaker to be at the top level in the United States.

Let’s start with the first aspect. My clients’ employees usually leave my keynotes highly motivated because I connect to the crowd emotionally during the session by:

3. Personal stories they can relate to

My change management presentation is based on my adventure story of traveling around the world with no money. People are encouraged by it, but the personal connection starts when I break down my change management experiences to a level where everyone has experienced something similar. I talk about how I had a hard time adopting change being on the road, how hard it was to constantly change plans, and how stressful it was to get used to new people over and over again.

When I explain these little things and demonstrate that I am not a natural-born expert on change management, I usually see many people in the crowd agreeing with what I’m saying with a big smiles. I create the audience connection by sharing that I find change management as hard as they do.

Next comes the second aspect: humor. I often talk about myself in a rather ironic way, and I don’t take myself too seriously. A typical start to my stress management keynote would be, ‘Hey everyone, today you are meeting the number one stress management patient (me).’

People start by having a laugh, and they realize I don’t want to be the hero or the expert but rather the guy who had to learn stress management the hard way after experiencing serious stress symptoms during a few of my projects. Basically, I present myself as someone who has had to learn over and over again. People find my style relatable, funny, and a great way to learn.

Well, How to Travel the World for Free is big for many clients because they might have seen the TV show or my book presentation on The Tonight Show. But How to Barter for Paradise seems to be the most impressive because not many people have managed yet to turn a small item like an apple into a real house in Hawaii by trading.

This sounds out-of-the-box that many of my keynotes dealing with this challenge get re-booked by clients just to hear this story one more time. In fact, all meeting participants get a free book of mine after a session to keep them motivated for the long term bringing high benefit to their company.
